About The Author

Dr. Gunadhar Padhi

MD · IDCCM · FCCCM · FIMSA · ECMO Diploma (Paris)

Dr. Gunadhar Padhi is a critical care physician, medical educator, and author. He currently serves as Chief Intensivist at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, one of India’s leading tertiary care institutions, where he manages complex, critically ill patients across medical, surgical, and transplant intensive care settings.

Training & education

His academic foundation combines rigorous clinical training with formal management education. He holds an MD along with the IDCCM (Indian Diploma in Critical Care Medicine), FCCCM (Fellowship of the College of Critical Care Medicine), and FIMSA (Fellowship of the Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Society of Asia). He further trained in advanced mechanical circulatory support through an ECMO Diploma from Paris, France, reflecting his specialised interest in extracorporeal life support and complex cardiopulmonary interactions in the ICU.

To complement his clinical expertise with the skills needed to lead modern healthcare teams, he also completed an MBA in Healthcare Management and Hospital Administration, with a specialisation in Generative AI, alongside an Advanced Diploma in Healthcare Management jointly delivered by IIM and AIIMS Nagpur.

Written work

As an author, Dr. Padhi has built an extensive catalogue of medical education resources spanning some of the most demanding examinations and clinical domains in critical care. His body of work includes structured preparation guides for the EDIC (European Diploma in Intensive Care) examination, covering strategic exam preparation, high-difficulty vignette banks, case-based clinical scenario training, and viva-ready reference material on equations, monitoring, and scoring systems. He has authored a dedicated series for the DrNB Critical Care Medicine examination, as well as comprehensive guides for NEET SS Critical Care Medicine.

Beyond examination preparation, he has written a full series of organ-specific transplant critical care manuals covering liver, heart, lung, and kidney transplantation, designed to give intensivists and trainees a practical, protocol-driven approach to perioperative and critical care management in this highly specialised field. His technical writing extends into point-of-care ultrasound, with a 27-chapter guide to POCUS in critical care, and into organ support technology, with detailed viva-style references on CRRT, IABP, ECMO, and mechanical circulatory support devices. He has also authored dedicated volumes on ECMO physiology and combined therapies, reflecting his clinical subspecialty interest.

Recognising that not all medical writing needs to be dense with jargon, he has also written for a lay audience, including a book offering an evidence-based, ICU physician’s perspective on weight loss — bringing the same rigor he applies to critical care literature to a subject that affects everyday readers.

Teaching

Alongside his writing, Dr. Padhi is an active clinician-educator and critical care mentor. He contributes to faculty development and hands-on workshops with the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM), including its Transplant Critical Care Course, and regularly develops interactive teaching tools and case-based simulations for trainees. His teaching philosophy — building understanding through structured frameworks, worked clinical cases, and repeated deliberate practice — runs through every book he writes.

Philosophy

Critical care knowledge, however complex, can be organised in a way that is learnable under pressure. Whether preparing a trainee for a high-stakes exam, guiding a colleague through a difficult ICU decision, or helping a general reader make sense of their health, he writes with the same goal: clarity that holds up when it matters most.
